Job Description

We are looking to recruit a relief porter who will be part of a team, who cover for the portering and security service at Durham Cathedral World Heritage Site. The role of Porter is historic to the Cathedral and dates back to ancient times. The modern equivalent encompasses routine foot patrols of the Cathedral site, knowledge of CCTV, fire systems, custody of keys and responsibility for securing the premises. Also providing security for major events held in the Cathedral.

The duties include:

  • Security of premises
  • General security including unlocking gates and doors; unsettling alarms in the morning; locking and setting alarms in the evening; calling out service engineers if required
  • Maintaining order throughout Cathedral premises in conjunction with other Heads of Department
  • Controlling the movement of vehicles and parking in The College
  • Security for some large services, events and music concerts
  • Regular site patrols

Ideally you will have significant experience of security duties including experience of a variety of alarm and fire systems. You will also have an understanding of the security issues associated with a significant historical building and its grounds. You must have excellent communication skills and be able to demonstrate an ability to manage difficult situations.

You must be willing to work shifts and you will need to be available at short notice on occasion. You must also be willing to adhere to strict confidentiality rules within the Cathedral.

First Aid, Safeguarding & Manual Handling training will be provided with any necessary equipment provided to the successful candidate.
