Advent and Christmas

Advent and Christmas is a special time of year and there are lots of ways in which you can enjoy the festive season at Durham Cathedral. Join a traditional service, attend a concert or event or bring the family for a winter day out.

During Advent and Christmas at Durham Cathedral, we host many services, starting with Advent Procession, into Christmas Day services, before entering into the season of Epiphany and Candlemas. Hear choral music sung by the Choirs of Durham Cathedral, join in with community Carol Services and experience Christmas concerts in the atmospheric cathedral.

What is Advent?

Advent is a time of waiting and hope, before a joyous celebration of Jesus' birth at Christmas. This year Advent begins on Sunday 1 December and lasts for four weeks. As the days reach their shortest, we take time during Advent to reflect and light candles to show our hope, in preparation for Christmas.
